NO CONDITION IS PERMANENT [Episode #221 ~ 04-04-20]

The locals are isolating in place alright, though the safe locale of choice happens to be The Purple Bat Lounge — “That most frabjous spot in a decidedly vorpal neighborhood.” It’s true. They simply never leave. Nor should you. For your club-of-one, in the comparative safety of your own home, DJ’s Reeshard & Lee-Roy have concocted a hex-breaking soundtrack, designed to murder both time and cabin fever in a manner most efficacious. The only condition for this unholy exchange? You must surrender to The Funk. C’mon, how hard can that be? Just wear the right outfit and keep your favorite distractions close at hand. And remember to click on the little arrow…just a few pixels downstream from here…

fela spliff 2

Pictured: Fela Kuti.

Much as we’re not usually given to ‘theme’ shows, we can’t ignore the specter hanging over the landscape. That feeling of playing in the ruins, that school is definitely out, no one knowing when it will convene again. Flocks of large black birds spiral overhead, defining then defying the Coriolanus Effect. They shriek as though in collective pain, and are gone in a moment.  During tornado season Midwesterners routinely experience  a world coming apart at the joins. But that vibe dissipates once the rain begins. Not so today. The feeling we now know — and can’t escape — lingers in empty restaurants and theaters, on freeways reenacting the late ’70s. It rolls outward like an unending tidal bore, past geriatric hippies dressed for a moon landing, doggedly pushing their carts into grocery stores long ago ransacked. At the Purple Bat Lounge, regulars peer through various strains of smoke, regarding an unnerved city from a crack in the front door. They look out, then laugh like broken toys, coughing up years’ worth of accumulated THC and nicotine. “Business as usual,” they snort, summoning another round from bartender LaWanda. Regardless, the music plays on…

We possess neither clairvoyance nor any other form of prescience, but we did suspect there was a reason for delaying the online appearance of Ep. 216…beyond our own procrastination. Then…Voilá! In a mere few blinks of a watery eye, the world’s populace is reduced to shut-in status. Here’s something to entertain all of you, a vivid reminder of what it was like to venture out in public, get trashed in a most righteous style, make profoundly ill-considered decisions and have several kinds of fun while behaving in such a manner. It happened at the Purple Bat Lounge a few Saturdays ago (and will happen again this coming Saturday). Now, it can happen in your own antiseptic spider hole. One  couldn’t take a more effective prophylactic measure to ward off cabin fever. Click below, then just try to tell us we’re wrong…

NO CONDITION IS PERMANENT [Episode #215 ~ 02-15-20]

King Tubby 77_0

Pictured: King Tubby.

“In the depths of winter, I at last discovered there was in me an invincible summer.” So best did cheery Al Camus put it in his 1954 essay Return To Tipasa. Regulars at the Purple Bat Lounge did not receive Al’s memo. For them, winter was all too real, grim to the brim, stripped of any imaginable conclusion. Better (read: warmer) times spent at the bar’s Outdoor Patio™, the local pimp idly tossing ever larger insects at the bug zapper for the amusement of his cronies…it may as well have been a half-forgotten scene glimpsed on Bill Kennedy‘s Million Dollar Movie for all the comfort such memories might offer reprobates hiding from an unpalatable Nature. DJ Lee-Roy fought despondency by reaching out to his longtime crush, kooky French film star Béatrice Dalle…to little avail. All the same, performing due diligence as broadcast professionals, the dog and his minder/co-host Reeshard soldiered on, serving the musical equivalent of antifreeze. Uncle Morty turned up to help and the Madison Theatre’s programmers arranged a memorial twin-bill for recently departed sado-siren Dyanne Thorne. Lots else transpired, of which you may learn more simply by clicking just…down…there…

NO CONDITION IS PERMANENT [Episode #214 ~ 02-08-20]

television mm cvr

Pictured: Television.

“In four months, Keith would appear in court for his drug trial, and some remnant of the feeling he had now would come back to him then. He would tell the court what he thought of five policemen invading his house, peering into his privacy. He would wear one of Anita’s scarves around his neck. During the recesses, he would order expensive lunches from his cell and get drunk on wine. When they asked him about the naked girl in the upstairs bedroom, he would say that he was not an old man and did not share their petty moral outrage, that the girl had just been taking a nap and that in any case she was his friend. When it was over, he would emerge from the trial transformed, a swaggering outlaw figure, no longer a lone misfit, no longer the shy dreamer who had been preyed upon at school by older boys who called him a faggot and a girl. He didn’t know that the next night the police would raid Brian’s flat, the flat in Earl’s Court he had shared with Anita, and frame him for possession of cocaine. When he thought of Brian now — leaving Brian by himself in the hotel — he couldn’t picture Brian himself, only the empty room.”  — Zachary Lazar, Sway.

Per the usual, it’s right down there…

NO CONDITION IS PERMANENT [Episode #212 ~ 01-25-20]

U Roy, back_2

Pictured: U-Roy.

It’s a bit embarrassing, so we might as well get it out of the way now: DJ Reeshard was walking Lee-Roy the other day when the latter, always mindful of his neighborhood enemies list, bolted for the gate containing an especially annoying Malamute. In the course of his spontaneous attack, Lee-Roy managed to flip his human pal end over end, with the end result of Reeshard landing on — and breaking — his little finger. The damaged digit is now in a splint. While this makes cuing records difficult, both DJ’s rocked the Purple Bat Lounge this past Saturday. Though, truth be told, Reeshard did most of the heavy lifting in this regard. Lee-Roy was too busy laughing at his injured companion’s aluminum accessory. Movies at the Madison, Uncle Morty and other expected benefits of an evening spent in a bad part of town — all present and accounted for. Now you can hear it too. Just click a few pixels to the south of this sentence…

No one could be more surprised at having made it to 2020 that the co-hosts of No Condition Is Permanent, DJ’s Reeshard & Lee-Roy. The new year arrived at the Purple Bat Lounge accompanied by three dozen tunes, any one among them capable of lifting the paint from old car fenders. Of course Uncle Morty stopped by, goods in hand. (What? You thought he wouldn’t?) And the programmers at The Madison stepped up to the plate as well, screening a seasonal-yet-creepy double feature. One couldn’t imagine a better soundtrack for tearing the old calendar off the wall…and now one doesn’t have to, as last Saturday’s experience can be shared by those at home, simply by clicking immediately below…
