Much as we’re not usually given to ‘theme’ shows, we can’t ignore the specter hanging over the landscape. That feeling of playing in the ruins, that school is definitely out, no one knowing when it will convene again. Flocks of large black birds spiral overhead, defining then defying the Coriolanus Effect. They shriek as though in collective pain, and are gone in a moment. During tornado season Midwesterners routinely experience a world coming apart at the joins. But that vibe dissipates once the rain begins. Not so today. The feeling we now know — and can’t escape — lingers in empty restaurants and theaters, on freeways reenacting the late ’70s. It rolls outward like an unending tidal bore, past geriatric hippies dressed for a moon landing, doggedly pushing their carts into grocery stores long ago ransacked. At the Purple Bat Lounge, regulars peer through various strains of smoke, regarding an unnerved city from a crack in the front door. They look out, then laugh like broken toys, coughing up years’ worth of accumulated THC and nicotine. “Business as usual,” they snort, summoning another round from bartender LaWanda. Regardless, the music plays on…
