“Eddie Romero made a series of awful ‘Blood Island’ films in the Philippines. The producers decided those weren’t bad enough, so they hired Al Adamson to direct a similar mad scientist film. Sure enough, it’s worse than the others. Al manages to do everything wrong again. Kent Taylor stars as the nut whose brain transplant experiments produce Gor (John Bloom), a big ugly monster who gets to carry Regina Carrol around. Dwarf assistant Angelo Rossitto laughs a lot and pokes at chained women.”
— Michael Weldon, describing ‘Brain Of Blood’ in The Psychotronic Encyclopedia Of Film.

We held off from putting last Saturday’s pre-Thanksgiving revels online, though not owing to the usual allegations of libel and character assassination nor sundry other threats of litigation. So dig in, and scarf up the macédoine of fab tunes heard last Saturday evening at the Purple Bat Lounge, all the while knowing that you were spared the indignity of actually having to be there. Well, that was anything but your normal-formal Saturday evening at the Purple Bat Lounge. DJ Lee-Roy stated his case, straight out of the gate, that he belonged to the exploited underclass and wanted his co-host (and legal guardian AND the guy who pays for whatever it is that Uncle Morty brings to the front curb every week) Reeshard to do something about it. The source of the dog’s umbrage and newly politicized outlook? Why the Little Red Book, of course. Though as the evening proceeded, the tome in question was not the red book authored by Chairman Mao. It was, instead, this one, as provided by bartender LaWanda. And it did show Lee-Roy a lot that he hadn’t been getting. All this, as more than 30 stormin’ tunes played, The Madison staged a Dolomite double feature and the most famous pit bull on Brush Street searched for a Rasta date for the movies, with questionable success. It’s a lot to take in, we’ll admit, but listening makes it go down that much more easily. So click just down there and hear for yourself…

After the last pumpkin has burnt out and begun to shrivel and liquefy; after the last costumed reveler has been apprehended; and after the last crack house set ablaze on Devil’s Night is reduced to a heap of smoking embers, something like normalcy returns to The Purple Bat Lounge. Wait! Did we say that the last blaze was extinguished? Far from it, Group! Why, one of the bar’s own DJ’s — yes, it was Lee-Roy, as though you had to ask — managed to ignite the audio mixer as last Saturday’s first set concluded. Anything after that might seem anti-climactic, but only to those unfamiliar with the innate potential within a Saturday evening on Brush Street. Blaxploitation movies playing at The Madison, a visit from Uncle Morty and the ever-escalating war of words between DJ Reeshard and his canine charge…well, it all goes toward ‘upping the FUN quotient,’ as the dog would have it. Find out how, simply by clicking on the big arrow, a few pixels south of here…

HERE IT IS: The episode commemorating the 6th Anniversary of No Condition Is Permanent‘s debut as part of Luxuria Music’s Saturday evening line-up. That the show began on Halloween seemed to augur well for its future. At any rate, that’s our story and we’re sticking to it. We — being DJ’s Reeshard & Lee-Roy — spun a lot of spooky novelty singles over the course of last Saturday evening, during which the Purple Bat Lounge staged its annual costume competition. The bar offers a bottle of Kentucky Owl as the yearly prize, though no one can remember anyone ever winning. (The collective recall of The Purple Bat’s patrons is often challenged by issues just such as these.) That bartender LaWanda dusted off the bottle in question as the competition began, left many wondering…but that’s neither here nor there. Halloween is our favorite time of year and, as always, it wouldn’t be the same without you. Hit that arrow-thing down there, and get your witch on…

Halloween is approaching, which is not only our favorite holiday but also represents the 6th anniversary of No Condition Is Permanent taking over the weekly Saturday evening shift at Luxuria Music. In the run-up to the big day, The Madison is showing yet another sleazy-yet-spooky twin-bill. DJ Lee-Roy is also gearing up for the occasion, planning a most special costume (which may upset sensitive souls and/or residents of Georgia). He and co-host Reeshard colored the atmosphere within the Purple Bat Lounge with three dozen tracks selected for their suitability to rattle windows in the neighborhood. Check it out, all of it, simply by clicking immediately below…

As late summer doldrums disappear in the rear-view mirror, even the narcotic-positive patrons of the Purple Bat Lounge sense Father Time dropping his foot on the accelerator. Why, in the space of a single Saturday evening they witnessed: Lee-Roy diving into a new special issue of Paws’n’Gravy magazine (to the extent that he nearly forgot about the show); DJ Reeshard and the aforementioned pit bull selecting nearly three dozen tunes and playing same at lease-breaking volume; Uncle Morty turning up with a small canister whose label spelled ‘trouble’ (though using different letters to accomplish as much); and the beginning of Halloween programming at The Madison. It’s all there to be heard, in whatever you consider as linear time, simply by clicking immediately below…

Pictured: Tura Satana in Faster Pussycat Kill! Kill!
It is Tura’s portrait of Varla in Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! that stopped the clock forever. With her trademark Germaine Monteil eyeliner and Max Factor pancake, a Frederick’s of Hollywood bra with specially made cups that ensured even cleavage with no unexpected pop-outs, and leather gloves—one of which inevitably holds a slim Nat Sherman cigarette—Varla’s a gender-bending femme fatale who still packs a wallop nearly forty years later. Tura didn’t have to do any research for the part. The tragic events of her childhood gave her a grim insight into the role that couldn’t be begged, borrowed, or stolen. “Varla is the most honest, maybe the one honest portrayal in the Meyer canon,” writes critic Richard Corliss. “Certainly the scariest.”

It’s still warm down on Brush St., and no one feels this more inside the Purple Bat Lounge than its DJ — the one permanently sewn into a fur coat. Lee-Roy continues to seek relief on the bar’s Outdoor Patio™, where sizzling bug carcasses provide a soundtrack nearly as interesting as the three dozen tunes spun by our canine selector and his partner & appointed guardian, Reeshard. In an effort to locate a lighter, Lee-Roy spent some of his time indoors rooting around within bartender LaWanda’s purse, the latter crammed with the tools of her trade. Our dog found the much needed implement immediately prior to Uncle Morty’s arrival. Which was good, as on this particular Saturday, Morty came bearing some of his private reserve. And what would that be? To learn this and so much more, just click on the arrow immediately below. And then, to borrow from Lowell Thomas, you are there…
