NO CONDITION IS PERMANENT [Episode #492 ~ 04-18-26]

Pictured: Barry White.
Funk is stigmatized in the same way that the “hot jazz” of Louis Armstrong was considered “sex music.” Funk is, of course, linked with sex, and difficulties with the word abound because of its auditory proximity to the word fuck, and the many potential implications of the words. This is in fact one of the very legitimizations of the music, for black culture in its unassimilated form is not burdened by Western distinctions of what is nasty or crude. Funk—and even “fuck music”—is therefore quite legitimate if one considers that music is a part of life and sex is a shameless and special part of life. James Brown’s classic recording of “Sex Machine” is a celebration of the strength and vitality of the black man’s sexuality. Barry White’s seemingly infinite capacity for anticipation and romantic begging was a gift that many young people born around 1974 should be grateful for.
