NO CONDITION IS PERMANENT [Episode #484 ~ 02-21-26]

Pictured: Rose Royce.
Then there was Rose Royce, the vehicle for Norman Whitfield’s late seventies creative pursuits that scored a No. 1 disco hit in 1976 with the movie soundtrack and disco hit Car Wash and followed with the soulful In Full Bloom LP in late 1977, and Strikes Again in 1978. Whitfield had a hit-making knack from his days producing the Temptations, and when it became clear that a self-contained band was the best image for his songwriting skills, he developed Rose Royce. Despite the heavy-handed packaging, Rose Royce scorched the charts with dance funk like “Do Your Dance” and “Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is,” as well as spunky seventies ballads like “Ooh Boy,” “Wishing on a Star,” and “Love Don’t Live Here Anymore.” By concentrating on Rose Royce, Whitfield gave up on his black rock project, the Undisputed Truth, despite the fact that they were perhaps the most creative band under his care.
