The medieval English round tells us: Sumer (sic) is icumen in. Or, as translated for Brush St. and surrounding environs: Damn, it’s hot in here. They fix that A/C? What? They forgot to install it? The Purple Bat Lounge takes on a decidedly swampy cast in the summer months. Its patrons adopt varying defenses. Some actually request mixers with their drinks. Bartender LaWanda has her hands full keeping the ice cube trays stocked. The bar’s management, however, responds to the spike in temperature by reopening the Outdoor Patio adjacent to the back door. With folding chairs arrayed next to trash cans in semi-circular formation, the Purple Bat adds value to an evening under the stars by allowing patio visitors to toss insects at the carriage lamp-style bug zapper hung above the alley. This pastime has grown into something like an outdoor sport down the years, with DJ Lee-Roy as one of its most vocal proponents. He and Reeshard managed to spin a few dozen stormin’ tunes during the Saturday evening in question, despite the pit bull’s insistence on ducking out to see what Lotsa Poppa brought to ‘feed’ the zapper. Ah, that scintillating admixture of noise, humidity, trash cologne, pit bull testosterone, insect carnage and Faygo Rock’n’Rye — in the summertime, you can’t beat it. And you can sample it, without fear of spillage, simply by hitting the arrow immediately below…
