No one (at least no one with whom we were on speaking terms) began last Saturday night with the thought of establishing a theme for the evening. What little plan there might have been involved turning up at the Purple Bat Lounge, getting trashed by the means within reach and enjoying the 3 dozen or so tunes spun by DJ’s Reeshard & Lee-Roy. Soon enough, however, designs appeared within designs, like ever-evolving fractal geometry…or whatever it is that happens to Lee-Roy’s vision when he does Whip-its. For one thing, a majority of the evening’s music featured what the late Bobby Keys called “the saxophonic device.” Then, after news of a badass Dolemite double feature screening at The Madison, Uncle Morty’s truck pulled up, bearing a canister of…Queen Bee! It only got spookier from there on out.
