NO CONDITION IS PERMANENT [Episode #50 ~ 12-20-14]

The greasy, white delicatessen sacks stacked up on her dresser. She walked the heels off her shoes. Her room rent at the Hotel Giaconda was running out. And then one night around ten o’clock when she was too hungry and sick of bagels to stay in the room she walked by a building on which neon letters spelled out GIRLS GIRLS—A GO-GO A GO-GO. A red striped canopy stretched from the building to the curb. And on the curb under the canopy a gigantic man with a gold cap and gold shoulders opened doors of low shiny automobiles. The giant at the door was occupied and she slipped right past him into a cavernous darkness filled with smoke, blinking bulbs, blazing ends of cigarettes, whirling bodies, bodies at rest, twisted bodies, bodies twisted, bodies frankly bodying other bodies frantically. And it was all—every movement from the gracious hips of a blond girl to the blurred hands of the bartender—all of it was synchronized with the music pouring out of a twelve-horned band, six trumpets and six saxophones, ranged in a golden line behind a deranged yellow-haired Negress coupled and copulating with a stand-up microphone, wailing that she would work it on out, work it on out. But Dolly’s eyes had come to rest on the single most spectacular aspect of the entire room: three cages hanging from the ceiling. Two of them had girls in them. The third, middle cage, was empty. The two caged girls were in violent motion. They wore brief tasseled costumes and sparkling gems in their navels.
