NO CONDITION IS PERMANENT [Episode #49 ~ 12-13-14]

The depiction of Cab in Fleischer’s animated cartoon characters is more questionable. As well as singing for the threatening walrus-ghost in Minnie the Moocher, Cab also provides the voice and movements for a hermit-like being in the later Old Man of the Mountain. This character makes explicit and frightening sexual advances to Betty, tickling her with his beard, removing her dress and fondling her breasts, having already caused a mass exodus from her small town in a thinly veiled metaphor for black encroachment into white housing areas. Fleischer may have realized the drawing power of the best African American performers, and presented them very professionally in live-action shots, but he was not immune from introducing stereotyping the moment his animators got to work. Aside from the glimpses of Cab and his band in live action in the opening sequences of these films, Cab was to make his first movie alongside humans, rather than cartoon characters, in The Big Broadcast of 1932, which went on release in October, and caught Cab in his outsize white tailcoat delivering a particularly theatrical version of “Kicking the Gong Around.” His mimed hand actions include cutting and snorting a line of coke, presumably an image the significance of which bypassed the director, Frank Tuttle, who was otherwise dealing with such uncontroversial performers as Bing Crosby and George Burns.
