NO CONDITION IS PERMANENT [Episode #48 ~ 12-06-14]

Another thing, too: Keith Richards did not sleep very much. I mean, a few hours here and there, but that was about it. ’Course, that’s about what I was doin’, too, because I was pretty much on the same schedule as him, so when he was ready to go, he’d either pull up to the dock and blast away on that air horn that he had on his boat or he’d be standin’ there next to my bed goin’, “Git yer Texas ass up!” The bay was horseshoe-shaped, and he lived at the tip of the horseshoe, around six o’clock, say, and I lived around eight o’clock. And he’d come by and blast us on his air horn—Jim was staying there, too—and I’d come runnin’ down to my dock, jump in his boat, and we’d go down to this little town right near the border with Italy, a place called Menton. This would generally be about seven or eight o’clock in the morning. He’d do this all the time.

So the schedule was, there was no schedule. It was Keith’s schedule. There was never really any way of knowing when he’d come by to get us, he’d just announce his presence with that air horn. He’d say “Are you up for breakfast?” and I always would be because, you know, you can’t sleep through a fuckin’ air horn. So we’d go down and get in the boat, and this was when there were a lot of American warships at anchor in Villefranche harbor, and we’d get in there and weave around the warships and sometimes one of the guys on a boat would recognize it was me and Keith—well, they’d recognize Keith, they didn’t have any clue who I was—and say stuff like, “Hey, Keith, how’re you doin’? Try some of this!”—they’d just come from Southeast Asia and they had tons of Thai weed, and they’d just throw it over to us. Keith and his boat became quite well known toolin’ around Villefranche harbor.
