NO CONDITION IS PERMANENT [Episode #36 ~ 08-23-14]

DRIVING IN CIRCLES

John Kaimon knew now he had to say something. “I guess his guts could handle anything.” What he wanted to ask Belt was why he had a picture of a midget crazy enough to eat a beer bottle hanging on the wall like that, but he did not want to seem pushy. He had found from experience that when you’re trying to get into somebody else’s game, the secret is not to be any more pushy than you absolutely had to be. After all, it was Belt’s ex-motel office. If he wanted to put the picture of a midget on the wall, that was his business.

“He is a legend in the karate world,” said Belt sadly. And then in an even sadder voice he went on to say that Jefferson Davis Munroe was talked about in dojos from California to New York. Jefferson Davis Munroe knew karate in greater detail than anyone else, he taught it, he gave demonstrations in it.

But he was master of a system that did not work. And there was no hope of him ever making it work. His killing side kick to the heart would strike a normal man two inches below the knee.

His shuto uki to the head would, at best, strike the upper thigh of an opponent. So Jefferson Davis Munroe, the most expert of all karateka in the world at every strike, kick, block and counter-move was reduced to giving demonstrations with the air as an opponent. And the other karateka, who admired and loved him, could not help their shame.

It was a freaky story and John Kaimon did not know whether to laugh or to cry. “Well,” he said at last, “if he meets another midget, he can sure whip his ass.”
