No Condition Is Permanent (ep. #10 ~ 01.11.14)

Racing seems to move no more rapidly as we near the end of the season. Here we are at Bowie, which is no place for sentimental repinings. The atmosphere and the course are the antithesis of Pimilico’s: strictly commercial. You can almost feel the pulsations of the pari-mutual machines clicking, and a blatant loudspeaker grinds out tunes from the next to the worst collection of phonograph records in the world.

– Audax Minore,  from ‘The Race Track’ column in The New Yorker, November 21, 1931
